Poul Thuesen, who is incidentally still alive aged 97 and living in Kolding, was born in the port of Assens, 20 miles south west of Odense. In 1938 he started training as a cabinet maker, being paid Kr 50 for a 48 hour week. He was a keen sailor and not unnaturally he joined the Danish Navy when he was called up. However his wish to maximise his sailing time foundered when he was posted to the Naval Academy as a batman. Following his service Poul went to stay with his uncle in Copenhagen, where he worked in the naval dockyard. Whilst there he married and three years later he and his wife decided to move across to the other side of the Little Belt bay to Kolding to start work for Bechmann Christensen. They had a son and daughter born to them in Kolding.
